The last information about Merapi
YOGYAKARTA, KOMPAS.com -The danger status of Mount Merapi in Central Java has been raised following its increasing activity on Thursday.
“The Volcanology Technology Development and Study (BPPTK) Agency in Yogyakarta has officially raised the danger status of the volcano from ’alert’ to ’prepared’ at 6pm on Thursday. As of today the status of Mt Merapi is prepared,” the chief of BPPTK in Yogyakarta, Subandrio said. He said the volcano’s activity has been rising over the past few days marked by tremors and lava flows.
“The eruption this time tends to spread in three directions namely to the south, southwest and to the north although no confirmation cannot as yet be made,” he said. He said the extent of the lava flows could not be determined as yet as the lava dome had not yet formed.
“If a lava dome is already built confirmation regarding the extent of the lava flow during eruption could be made,” he said.
He said in the 2006 eruption the flow reached as far as seven kilometers away from the mountain’s peak. “But in line with every hike of activity it is not impossible for the eruption to flow lava up to 15 kilometers away,” he said.
Subandrio said because of the significant rise in activity of the mountain mount climbing activity had been stopped. “For safety reasons the climbing routes have been closed,” he said.
A mountain monitoring worker at the post in Kaliurang, Triono, said the sound of volcanic material flows had more often been heard. “Today we have heard twice. We have been able to hear lava flows directly,” he said.
According to monitoring data on October 20, there have so far been 11 deep volcanic tremors, 28 shallow volcanic tremors, 479 multiphase tremors and 85 lava flows. “Today from 00.00 hours to 07.00 hours there was one volcanic tremor, 69 shallow volcanic tremors, 69 multiphase tremors and 32 lava flows,” he said.
